This a great article from BusinessWeek that makes alot of the same conclusions I came to when writing my PR. Energy use and reduction should come about as a piecemeal affair. Here, the author is talking about national energy, not just automotive energy, but he does comment on diesel engine efficiency. There are dozens of small steps that could (will?) be taken to bring about a large change in the consumption of fossil fuels. It's just a matter of taking them.
